How to Grow an App After Launch: A 30-Day Playbook
Launch day is easy. The hard part is what happens next — when you need to grow an app that already exists but isn't compounding.
This playbook is for teams (or solo founders) with a live app, some users, and no clear growth engine yet.
Days 1–7: Diagnose before you spend
Before asking how to grow app installs, answer:
- What % of new users reach your "aha" event?
- What does D1 / D7 retention look like by source?
- Which channel drove the highest-quality users so far?
If you can't answer these, pause paid scale. Fix measurement first.
Days 8–14: Fix the first mile
Most apps leak in onboarding:
- Reduce steps to first value
- Add one contextual prompt (not five)
- Align store promise with in-app first screen
Grow app efforts fail when the store ad promises X and the app delivers Y.
Days 15–21: Run structured creative tests
Pick one channel you can operate weekly (often Meta or TikTok for consumer apps).
Test matrix:
| Variable | Examples |
|---|---|
| Hook | Pain, outcome, social proof |
| Format | UGC, screen recording, founder voice |
| Audience | Broad vs. interest stacks |
Kill 70% of variants fast. Iterate top 2.
Days 22–30: Layer ASO + retargeting
Parallel tracks:
- ASO: keywords, screenshots, localized listings
- Retargeting: bring back users who installed but didn't activate
- Referral/organic loops: only if core retention is stable
How to know it's working
You're on track when:
- Activation rate trends up week over week
- CPI stays flat while creative volume increases
- Retention by cohort stabilizes (not perfect — stable)
Common post-launch trap
Founders jump from "how to grow an app" advice to adding channels. More channels with weak retention = faster cash burn.
Sequence: retention → creative → scale.
